In September and October 2023, the Amazon witnessed thick layers of smoke blanketing the region, a result of rampant wildfires exacerbated by severe drought. During the first two weeks of November 2023, a staggering 2,387 fires ravaged the Amazon region, which were attributed to extreme drought conditions. The fire sweeping through Brazil's rainforests represents a major threat to local wildlife. They've destroyed the habitat of protected species and led many animals to die of asphyxiation. Professor Hans-Otto Poertner further cautions, “Any further delay in concerted global action… will miss a brief and rapidly closing window to secure a liveable future.”
