Periodontitis is the most common cause of tooth loss. The relationship between diabetes and periodontitis is one of the strongest connections between mouth and body. Inflammation that starts in the mouth impairs the body’s ability to utilize insulin, which some diabetics are lacking to begin with. Also, several research studies have suggested that women with periodontal disease may be more likely to give birth to a preterm or low-birthweight baby than women with healthy gums. Therefore, periodontitis is a more serious problem than you might have thought.
