Vegan interior design is characterized by its respect for animal-people rights, pursuit of sustainability, and emphasis on aesthetics and health in indoor spaces. It embraces various styles and emphasizes the use of materials that are free from animal-people sources, such as vegan leather alternatives and sustainable textiles. Vegan design style encourages conscious, values-aligned choices in interior environments while not compromising on aesthetics and comfort.

Deborah DiMare is a vegan interior designer, who works out of Miami, Florida, USA and New York City, USA. “The spaces I create are not made from animal skins or parts. They’re vegan and humane. My mission is to show others that ultra-luxury design can still look and feel fabulous, be well-priced, all while saving our magnificent animals that have every right to roam this Earth freely and with respect.”

Let’s get to some practical tips on how to design a vegan space. The most difficult part of finding vegan furnishings is determining what’s inside. A sofa might have beautiful vegan material like vegan leather, linen, or cotton on the outside, but be stuffed with animal-people feathers, goose down, or wool. Pillows, mattresses, and cushions run the same risk of being stuffed with products derived from our animal friends such as feathers or wool batting. Vegan options for these products include natural latex foam, cotton batting, or polyester filling. Another place where animal-people-based products can hide is rugs. Many rugs are made of wool.

“And there’s wall paint. It’s either mostly made with casein, which comes from cow’s milk, and most wall paints have also been tested on animals.” Aline was also surprised to find that common items such as towels and toilet paper are often not vegan. Toilet paper frequently contains gelatin, which is made from animal-people bones. The manufacture of towels can include beeswax as well as solvents and dyes that have been tested on animal-people.

One aspect of vegan home design that we haven’t touched on is toxins. While having a nontoxic home may not seem to be a vegan issue, protecting the health of the animal friends in our families as well as the humans is important. Spending a bit of time to find organic and non-toxic home products makes your home healthy and happy for all the inhabitants.
